Some connector materials such as plastics, adhesives, platings, and even metals can release gases in a vacuum. In spacecraft applications, these light weight molecules can condense onto optical elements or other sensitive equipment and degrade performance. NASA's Stardust spaceprobe suffered reduced image quality due to an unknown contaminant that had condensed on the CCD sensor of the navigation camera. A similar problem affected the Cassini-Huygens spaceprobe's Narrow Angle Camera (but was corrected by repeatedly heating the system to 4 degrees Celsius). To reduce the risk of this happening, space grade connectors can be manufactured using low out-gassing materials and then treated in a vacuum oven. Baking the complete connector in a controlled vacuum drives off volatiles and significantly reduces the risk of subsequent outgassing in space. PEI-Genesis builds space-rated connectors and uses a state of the art vacuum oven system to process all of our space grade connectors.

PEI-Genesis has a state of the art turbo-pump vacuum oven system for out-gassing connectors destined for use in space applications. This $100K+ oven is fully automated, controlling the entire process from beginning to end and producing a vacuum in excess of 1 x 10 -7 Torr.
After processing, the connectors are flushed in a nitrogen atmosphere and then undergo special handling and packaging to insure that no contaminants are reintroduced. Full data logging is integrated into the system. A color chart and process report is issued with each shipment recording the real-time temperature and vacuum levels for each batch of connectors. Most importantly, this oven can fully outgas in 4 hours. In most cases, this allows PEI to assemble, test, outgas, package, and ship space grade connectors within our normal 48 hour build-ship promise. To back up this extended capability, PEI-Genesis has the largest connector component inventory in the world. We can build thousands of different space grade connectors from stock including MIL-DTL-38999 Class G, NASA specifications, D-Subminiature, and even highly specialized (magnetometer tested) non-magnetic D-Subminiatures, all assembled to your exact specification and shipped in 48 hours.
